Rita Ora's Red Lips

When ancient Mesopotamian women crushed gemstones to decorate their lips, they started a cosmetic fashion trend we follow to this very day: applying lipstick. In medieval Europe, lipstick was banned by the Church and basically, applying cosmetics was reserved for 'prostitutes'.

Today, the use of cosmetics and lipstick in particular, is still frowned upon in certain sections of social groupings in Namibia, especially by those who support the values of a (unequal) patriarchal society. In general, Namibian women have embraced lipstick and love using it! Isn't it just the perfect finishing touch?

Fast-forward to 2013 and every decent, working woman has her favourite brand or colour of lipstick...somewhere, in her bag, or on the dressing table...somewhere. Lipstick is a safe and beneficial product today, unlike that of the ancient Egyptians who became ill after applying their particular teint. Today, we're fortunate and spoilt for choice when it comes to choosing which shade of lipstick to buy, and where.

British singer and the new face of Italian leisure shoe brand, Superga, Rita Ora has everyone talking about her signature 'RED LIPS'. Like Gwen Stefani before her, Ora never leaves the house without applying her poppy-coloured lipstick. And, even if she is in show business, Ora has unwittingly revived a trend.

Pinkish red lips are sexual and reproductive indicators of youth, vitality, energy and health. Rita Ora's enhanced red lips say something more... Her red pout says she's confident, bold and direct. Ora is definitely not afraid of attention, she invites it.

In addition to enhancing vitality, red lips also 'pop' your eyes. It has face-changing qualities, indeed. Apply red lipstick and see your eyes instantly enlarge and your skin tone even out...amazingly, the striking sharpness of  red lipstick creates an optical illusion!

If you're feeling 'down' or not particularly motivated, or just plain uninspired, choose a public destination (like Maerua Mall) and apply some red lipstick. You'll make your own day!

C hristianity arrived on the shores of southern Africa approximately 600 years ago, and unbeknownst to the bright-eyed European missionaries who disembarked from sodden ships at the Cape of Good Hope, it had been practiced on the African continent, and flourished as an independent religion for almost 1,000 years before, in Ethiopia.
