Namibia, land of the brave, is nowhere and I mean absolutely nowhere on the fashion calendar. The situation with regards to fashion and appropriate attire is so desperate, women who possess a little bit of style and the complimentary wardrobe, often 'dress down' or hesitate to venture outside, for fear of appearing 'overdressed' or subjected to stares from strangers. In general, the female populace make conformist and conservative choices in attire for work, events and leisure. Most often, leisure wear is worn to work and events, no one bats an eye and everyone pretends not to notice. It is time for the situation to change.
Spring - Summer 2013 is a time of energy and activity in Namibia. Summer is associated with Christmas, bonuses and annual holidays. Many Namibians leave the capital, Windhoek, to visit family and friends in other parts of the country, or migrate in large numbers to the coastal town of Swakopmund for a bit of sun, sea, change of scenery, much needed rest and a tan. Swakopmund is without a doubt the holiday 'hot spot' of the country.
In terms of fashion, the colour predictions for Spring - Summer 2013 are: emerald, jade, royal blue, red poppy, nectarines and yellows. Evening wear, shiny fabrics, in rich colours, symbolising fecundity, opulence, intensity, drama and ultimately, wealth.
In Namibia, most beauties are not fair-skinned, long-haired slim European waifs... The majority of women are solidly built, attractive in an earthy, rural (without cosmetics / make-up) and hair is frequently unstyled, tied back, plaited or naturally styled. Accessories are minimal and conservative. Shoes are comfortable and predominantly, cheap.
The colour palettes predicted for Spring - Summer 2013 (strong, bold colours) will definitely compliment all the varieties of pigmented skin under the Namibian sun and one can only hope will serve as inspiration for a little bit of shine, courage and confidence this summer.
