FNB Namibia issued a warning that fraudsters
are keeping up with the latest trends and have devised a new skimming device
which fits onto the card-insertion slot of ATM’s (automatic teller machines).
Brandon Brock, Manager: FNB ATM has advised that this new scam is thus far only
happening in South Africa, but that FNB Namibia wished to pro-actively warn all
customers of this new happening. “Many of our customers also travel to our
neighboring country and thus need to be vigilant. Further, unfortunately we
are also targets for fraudsters and one can never be too attentive.”
"Skimmers"
are devices installed by thieves to surreptitiously swipe credit and debit-card
information and look as though they are part of the actual ATM. These devices are used to
scan mag-strip details directly from customers' ATM cards. Simultaneously, while the mag-strip is read, a camera located in the side of the “skimmer” is
viewing every key the customer pushes on the keypad. This means that not only
do criminals have the card information but also the pin number, making it
simpler to transfer customer details to any card with a mag-strip and withdraw funds
from an ATM.
Brock said that there were a
few tips for customers with regard to detecting a possible problem at the ATM.
“If you look carefully at one of the skimmers, they look like part of the machine. Before swiping your debit, cheque
or credit card, wiggle the protruding slot in which you insert your card. Thieves
often install skimmers on top of the ATM's actual slot and secure the skimmer
with adhesive. Check the device and wiggle it to see if it's loose or if it
falls off. Look for remnants or residue of double-sided tape. Anything that
looks unusual, check it out and report. When you type in your PIN on the machine, cover it
up so no one can see it.
“Finally, if you’re not
sure, use one of our other ATMs which is hopefully not too far. Alternatively, FNB customers who are registered for Cellphone Banking can perform a card less
withdrawal in Namibia using Cellphone Banking. As you won’t be using a card you
cannot become a victim of this type of crime.”
