Wildlife photography
is regarded as the one of the most challenging forms of photography. Sound
technical skills, being at the right place at the right time (‘pure luck’),
specialised equipment, excellent field skills complimented by a thorough
understanding of animal behaviour makes for a craft requiring large amounts of
patience and dedication on the part of a photographer.
The greatest difficulty presented by wildlife photography is
undoubtedly the unpredictability of
the subjects’ behaviour because animals in the wild cannot be manipulated or
‘composed’ to produce the perfect picture; instead the photographer manipulates
and combines his particular set of skills and equipment to accommodate the
subject. The same difficulty presented by unpredictability has an added dimension
in that animal behaviour and responses cannot
be repeated for the pleasure of the camera. Wildlife photographers have
split-seconds, seconds and a few minutes at most, to capture wildlife in
natural surroundings and they’ll spend days and months, in a particular
location, patiently waiting to capture a subject in the proper light, from the
right angle.
Omba Gallery is currently hosting a temporary solo exhibition
of German wildlife photographer and animal ecologist, Dr. Bernd Wasiolka, called
‘Kalahari Dreaming’. The exhibition opened at Omba Gallery on 3 October
2013 and will run until Saturday, 19th
October 2013.
Wasiolka’s photographs at Omba Gallery are mounted on wooden
frames, printed on canvas and displayed at high-quality resolution. There were
neither discernible dark spots nor blurred edges in sight; the contrast and
lines are sharp and brittle. With the exception of three or four images, all
were captured using natural light, the magnificent Kalahari serving as the
perfect background. ‘Kalahari Dreaming’
is also the name of his book, an A4,
landscaped compilation of wildlife photographs, arranged and labelled in the
form of a family photo album. The photographs range in price from N$ 3 500.00 to N$ 10 000.00
and the book retails at N$ 550.00.
Dr. Bernd Wasiolka
currently assists the Cheetah Research
Project in Windhoek but is available for private viewings and interviews at
Omba Gallery.
