Before Miley Cyrus walked out on the stage at this year's MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs), despite a trail of paparazzi images littering tabloids throughout the first half of 2013 and the entire 2012 that 'Hannah Montana is Very Much Dead', despite glaring evidence that she is desperately seeking to change the 'Hannah' perception, despite a clear indication (haircut, clothing, style) that Miley is in rebellion against a preconception of her and a refusal to allow it, despite ALL of the above, ALL the signs, ALL the clear indications she doesn't want to be typecast or 'boxed' into an idea of who she is, EVERYONE is amazingly shocked at Miley Cyrus' performance at the MTV VMAs.
I'm just as shocked at everyone who appears to be shocked. I mean...it was clear as daylight, right? Right there, in front of our eyes, Miley Cyrus was out to kill 'Hannah Montana' first opportunity she got! The problem is, no one was listening and no one paid attention.
What shocks me even more is that I didn't realise Miley Cyrus was this serious about her career as entertainer! She pulled out all the stops. Tongues are wagging, criticism is flying thick and fast, shock is expressed, her performance is labeled as 'racist', 'disgusting' and 'vulgar'. She was in her underwear, barely appropriately dressed, her dancing is described as 'lewd' but I'll add this, Miley Cyrus is truly out to establish herself as a serious female entertainer and she's shown, she'll stop at nothing to achieve that goal.
A cheap slap in the face came from Brooke Shields, who acted the role of Cyrus' mother in 'Hannah Montana' and who expressed her disappointment in Miley's performance at the MTV VMAs with the following words: 'I just want to know who's advising her, and why this (the racy display) is necessary... Our children can't watch that.'
I'm shocked at Brooke's duplicity and self-righteousness, to say the least. This coming from a woman who acted a child prostitute in the movie 'Pretty Baby'? At the age of 14, Shields equally shocked the world by appearing almost naked in a controversial Calvin Klein advertisement and provocatively declaring that 'nothing' comes between her and her pair of jeans!
Miley Cyrus grew up in the public eye, in the harsh glare of artificial lights, with limited privacy and judging from her interpretation of certain issues, the thinnest of moral guidance. A product of her society, a mirrored reflection of her upbringing, for her performance at the MTV VMAs she used what and who was at her disposal, pushed her society's limits and shocked the world into taking notice.
