Last Friday was a miserable day. I looked forward to the Africa's Finest Fashion Renaissance event at Hotel Thuringerhof in Windhoek with the same enthusiasm as for a shoe-and-bag shopping spree. But by one o'clock of that day, I had to call it quits. My health suffered a blow and sick as a designer puppy, I dragged myself to the pharmacy and then to bed, where I remained in agony until the following day. And so, I missed the event.
Fortunately, the organisers kindly uploaded photographs on the Facebook page and after reviewing the photographs, my eyes twinkled, my snout glistened, I licked my chops and grinned broadly. The reason? This event exposed a real rough diamond in the form of YD (young designer) Pewa Metha Uushona.

Twenty-four year-old Pewa Metha Uushona has something 'different' and it's so subtle, her style could easily be dismissed as just another 'ethnic' look. Look closer and you'll see a designer who has the potential to take that same 'ethnic' look and make it a trend, a viable trend. That's how good her range of menswear is...
Young Pewa hails from Tsumeb in northern Namibia but is based in the beautiful coastal town of Swakopmund. From what I gathered, she studied at the Cape Academy of Fashion Design and at UNAM (University of Namibia).
Talented YDs like Pewa require nurturing, mentoring, development and long-term investment. Even though financial backers are far and few between in our wide-spaced, brave Namibia, Pewa's talent can't be left in the dark. She shouldn't go unnoticed. Let's support this talented diamond, encourage and nurture her because as we all know, Namibian diamonds are a girl's best friend.
